ITB Collaborates with BPDPKS to Develop Palm Gasoline
The Center for Catalysis Engineering, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in collaboration with the Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS) has succeeded in developing catalyst technology and building a pilot unit for the production of biohydrocarbon gasoline.
This technology uses the basic raw material of palm oil. Indonesia as the largest palm oil producing country in the world currently produces 49 million tons of CPO/year. At the same time, Indonesia is the second largest importer of gasoline in the world, and is very interested in developing palm oil production technology. For this reason, ITB is collaborating with PT Energy Management Indonesia to carry out the conceptual design of a palm oil mill with a capacity of 50,000 tons/year. This production unit can be developed as a production unit that can be built independently in oil palm centers spread throughout Indonesia. "We are trying to process CPO into IVO," explained Melia Laniwati Gunawan, member of the Red and White Catalyst team, from KK Chemical Reaction and Catalyst Technology - FTI. has been built and is currently located in Musi Banyuasin Regency (MUBA), South Sumatra. IVO is used as a raw material to make Bensa in the pilot unit of Bensa production. The conversion of IVO into gasoline requires a catalyst. So we need a reactor that produces a catalyst. The formula and procedure for making catalysts are the result of research by the Center for Catalysis Engineering, Bandung Institute of Technology. Gasoline from this palm has a Research Octane Number, RON 105-112, which means it is very high.
