Protecting Habitat, Preventing Conflict with Elephants
The Jambi Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) together with the Conservation Partner Society (MMK)
the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), SOS Indonesia, and the supplier company APP Sinar Mas, radio-tracked a male elephant named Ozzy. At that time, Ozzy was visiting the oil palm plantation of a resident of RT 03, Sungai Landai Hamlet, which is located in a production forest area. Ozzy also regularly explores the buffer area of Bukit Tigapuluh, Jambi. According to the Head of the Jambi BKSDA Tebo Conservation Resort, Hefa Edison, human-elephant conflict is a negative interaction that arises due to the use of the same space in the habitat of Sumatran elephants. About 70 percent of elephant habitat is outside conservation areas. "Unfortunately, agricultural land and plantations that are managed by humans are elephants' favorite forage crops such as oil palm, rubber, and secondary crops," he said. Ozzy, continued Hefa, is one of about 120 Sumatran elephants from five groups that live in and buffer areas of Bukit Tigapuluh National Park. Its habitat is sandwiched between plantations and community-owned fields. Head of the Social Security Department of PT Wirakarya Sakti (WKS) Jambi, Faisal Fuad, supports social forestry programs through community empowerment programs. The company, he said, was ready to cooperate and provide support in the form of training, procurement of seeds and market opening or distribution of harvested produce. "It's like the cultivation of honey bees which feed on nectar and pollen from the flowers of woody plants. Cooperation is an alternative to conflict mitigation with Sumatran elephants," he said.
