Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) Certification Not Optimal

Advisor to the Forum for the National Action Plan for Sustainable Palm Oil, Rusman Heriawan, assessed that the acceleration program for Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification was not optimal.
"In fact, ISPO is a necessity and a quantitative indicator of how far palm oil plantations apply aspects of sustainability and environmental protection that are assessed by other countries," he said yesterday. According to Rusman, in 2020, only 682 oil palm plantations have ISPO certificates. Only 5.78 million hectares of land have been certified, or 35 percent of the total 16.38 million hectares of oil palm plantations. Certification of large private companies reached 62.75 percent. However, state-owned plantations that have ISPO are only 32.53 percent. The sad thing, said Rusman, is that smallholder plantations, both plasma and independent, are only certified at 0.19 percent. Senior Advisor to the Kehati Foundation, Diah Suriadiredja, said that Indonesian palm oil still has problems, one of which is the 3.4 million hectares of plantations located in forest areas. According to him, this issue will continue to suppress the prestige of Indonesian palm oil products in the market. Meanwhile, senior economist from the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef), Fadhil Hasan, regrets that ISPO has not been recognized by the world. In fact, he said, ISPO has undergone significant improvements, strengthening, and changes so that it should be able to resolve the bad assessment of national palm oil products. Sinarmas Head of Sustainability Policy and Compliance, Haskarlianus Pasang, said the industry needed support from the government to implement ISPO. To increase the credibility of ISPO-certified products, Haskarlianus assessed that the government needs to initiate more tangible incentives, such as campaigns for the good impact of ISPO implementation for the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
